Texting while driving – it’s a family affair, not just teens.
It’s time to buckle down and set a good example. Yep, that’s right, it’s you I’m talking to. Ok, I’m talking to me too, but the latest study is scary, very scary. Not only are teens texting while they drive, but they don’t seem to care – it’s apparent that being ‘connected’ is more important than being safe while driving. Let’s face it, when you’re a teen, you don’t have the driving skills of someone say in your late 20’s or 30’s – I don’t care who you are.
Yesterday’s article on Mashable sums up the new study on teens and texting. Here’s a couple quotes:
The research is also indicative of the fact that children might be picking up the dangerous behaviors from their parents. The report states that, “the frequency of teens reporting parent cell phone use behind the wheel in our focus groups was striking, and suggested that, in many cases, texting while driving is a family affair.”
In a qualitative interview one teen boy even said, “Yeah [my dad] drives like he’s drunk. His phone is just like sitting in front of his face, and he puts his knees on the bottom of the steering wheel and tries to text.”
